Keeping Your Home Safe for Seniors

The older we get, the more vulnerable we are. We move slower, don't see quite as well and we lose some of the strength we need to maintain balance. Although these days, more people are taking care of their health and thus many seniors live active and robust lives, it cannot be denied that these changes do happen - whether we like it or not. These can lead to accidents such as falls or sprains. The elderly also become more prone to the dangers of theft or pick pocketing, because of this perceived vulnerability. It is important to know and understand what you can do to keep yourself or your elderly loved ones safe and secure.

The first thing to do to keep your elderly loved ones safe is to create a safe home. We spend most of our time at home and it is imperative that our home is a safe haven for our loved ones - young or elderly.

To prevent falls you can install handrails on both sides of the staircase so that there is something to hold on to when going up or down the stairs. This also ensures that people (or even your pets) don't fall off the stairs.

You can also install grab bars in the shower, tub and near the toilets. Young or old, there have been many cases where people fall or slip in the bathroom. Grab bars are the easiest and most effective solution to avoid any bathroom-related incidents. Do not leave anything wet on the floor and use rubber or non-slip mats.

It is also important that your home is well lighted. The older we get, the weaker our eyesight becomes. You can use automated lighting to light up rooms as you enter or even set them to turn on when you are not at home to make it appear s though the place is occupied.

Additionally, medical alarms can be installed to provide 24 hour monitoring, keep track of a person or call for help. This is greet as it lets the person live independently, but it lets them keep in touch with people in case of emergencies.

Our home is our haven. It is important to keep it safe for everyone - young or old. To ensure that you have a safe environment for everyone, minimize as much potential risks as possible and we at CBS Security Systems are here to help you with your security needs. I live with my 82 year old grandmother. She is quite healthy and robust for her age. We have grab rails in the bathroom because she is still quite independent and likes to do things on her own - but having those rails allows me to relax and not fuss on her so much.
